Mark is a 42 year old dairy farmer, he is married to Katrina (38) and they have 4 children, Matthew (18) is a student at the University of Newcastle studying environmental engineering, Garth (17) is at boarding school in year 12, Ben (15) in year 9 at school with his brother, and Meredyth (4) who is still at home. The farm is making a good profit as Mark has signed a contract with Coles supermarkets. He employs 4 farm hands and the boys help out when they are home from school. Mark does not believe in insurances as “they are just a waste of money” therefore he has no income protection or health insurance.
Following a severe storm where there was significant damage to some of the out buildings Mark is up on the hay barn roof fixing a leak when the roof gives way. Mark falls perpendicularly about 8 metres landing on a hay bale with his feet. He is found moments later by one of the farm hands who fortunately knows not to move him and calls 000 and then calls Katrina. He stays with Mark until the ambulance arrives.
