MSQ171 Business Data Analysis Assignment 代写

MSQ171 Business Data Analysis Assignment One, Trimester 1 2013  1
M ELBOURNE  I NSTITUTE OF  B USINESS AND  T ECHNOLOGY
    In association  with
    D EAKIN  U NIVERSITY
    MSQ171  Business Data  An alysis
    Assignment One
    Marks:  20%
Due Date:  1:00 pm, Monday 22 nd April 2013 (Week 7)
(Submitted electronically to the Portal AND in identical hardcopy to your lecturer’s locker.
Burwood students: Level 4, Building LA)
    Background
This assignment requires you to analyse a data set, interpret the results and then report your findings in a
written letter to a person with little or no knowledge of statistical data analysis.
    The assignment may be completed
      individually, or
  in a group of two or three students.
o Groups must contain students  fr om the same class (= same lecturer AND class time)!
5% of available marks will be deducted if the group contains students from different
    classes.
o Only one (1) submission per group needs to be made.
There are learning advantages to working as a group, though these exist only when each member of the
group contributes. Your group should meet, or communicate with one another, to discuss what analysis is
required and also to review the report before submitting.
The assignment uses the file “Insurance.xlsx” which can be downloaded from the MSQ171 section in
    Moodle (in the MIBT Portal).
    Scenario
You are Gwen Parker, a senior analyst in the Research and Analysis group at Financial Review Magazine.
Your primary role is to evaluate new products and services. You are often required to report outcomes of
your analysis to senior editors at the Magazine who have little or no knowledge of statistics. Of specific
interest to Financial Review magazine is the increasing number of companies that offer brokerage services
for car insurance and its potential implications for consumers. An insurance broker is an independent
insurance agent who works with many insurance companies to find the best available policies for his or her
customers. Most of these brokers are advertising that they are able to save car insurance customers
hundreds of dollars each year on insurance premiums. Just recently, your research and analysis group
MSQ171 Business Data Analysis Assignment One, Trimester 1 2013  2
purchased a dataset from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (Insurance.xlsx), which contains data on car
insurance brokers as well as other related data. James Bronson, one of the senior editors of Financial Review
Magazine has written to you regarding the Car Insurance Brokers. His memo is reproduced on page 4.
    Assignment submission
Your submission will comprise two (2) parts:
  Part 1: Data Analysis (the Excel ‘Results’ worksheet output, max. 10 pages)
  Part 2: Written letter (max. 2 pages).
Both parts may be contained in a single file, but their content must be separated. Failure to separate Part 1
and Part 2 will be penalised dependant on the severity. Furthermore, up to three (3) marks will be
deducted for each part where the page limit is exceeded.
The Assignment must be submitted both,
    i.  electronically and
ii.  in identical hardcopy by the due date.
o 10% of available marks will be deducted if the assignment is only submitted in one
    format.
    Electronic submission:
There will be a link in Moodle under Week 7 labelled “Assignment 1 Online Submission”, where a
maximum of three (3) files (max. 5MB in total) can be uploaded. The naming of the files as well as the
composition is your choice. For example, you can have one file containing everything, or separate files for
the analysis and the letter. Only one of the group members needs to perform the upload.
    Hardcopy submission:
    1) The printed hardcopy of the assignment must be identical with the electronic submission!
Differences will be penalised dependant on the severity.
    2) You must complete one (1) Assignment Cover Sheet (MIBT Student Portal: Student -> Forms ->
Forms). Details of all group members along with their signatures must be included. If a name or
signature is missing, that student will not receive any marks. Assignments submitted without
a completed MIBT Assignment Cover Sheet will NOT be accepted, and therefore considered
    not submitted.
    3) The completed Assignment Cover Sheet must be stapled together with the printed hardcopy.
Loose paper is not acceptable. Your lecturer assumes no responsibility for lost pages!
    4) The hardcopy must be placed in the student’s/group’s lecturer’s locker.
(For Burwood students: level 4, building LA. Assignments will not be accepted at MIBT
    Reception).
Students must maintain backup copies of all their assignment work. Electronic loss of data is common,
but is NOT a satisfactory excuse for an extension of the submission date.
For group submissions, only one electronic and one hardcopy of the assignment need to be
submitted. It is up to the group to nominate a person to submit on their behalf.
MSQ171 Business Data Analysis Assignment One, Trimester 1 2013  3
    Late submission of assignments
    Extension for medical reasons
If your work is late due to medical reasons, you will not need to seek the prior approval from your
lecturer. However , you must attach a Doctor’s certificate to your assignment with a note that the work is
    late for medical reasons.
Please note that, in these circumstances, the medical certificate must cover the entire period of the
extension, from the time the assignment was due until the time it is submitted.
    Penalties for late submissions
Assignments received late and without prior approval, will be penalised. A penalty of 5% of the
available marks  will be deducted for every day the assignment is late. Assignments received after one
    (1) calendar week and without an approved extension, will not be accepted, and therefore considered
    not submitted.
MSQ171 Business Data Analysis Assignment One, Trimester 1 2013  4
    For Attention: Gwen Parker  25/03/2013
    From: James Bronson, Editor
    Regarding: Analysis of Insurance Brokers
    Dear Gwen,
Regarding the recently purchased dataset from Australian Bureau of Statistics, can you please provide me
with answers to the following questions? Your responses will assist me in writing about Car Insurance Brokers
in the innovative business feature section of our next issue.
    1. Can you provide me with an overall summary of how much brokers have currently quoted car insurance
    customers on their insurance premiums?
    2. I am also interested whether quotes vary between brokers. Are there significant differences in their
    quotes?
    3. Can you inform me how frequently each broker is used?
    4. In addition, can you further analyse to see whether the following factors affect customers’ choice of
    broker?
    a. Customers’ gender (Male vs. Female)
    b. The area they live in (Rural vs. Urban)
    5. I have heard that some brokers tend to be favoured in some states. Is there any evidence for this?
    6. Finally, can you provide a summary of which factor (or factors) has the most influence on current
insurance premium quotes? A short description of the relationship would be fine.
Please present your written findings in the form of a Word document (no more than 2 pages), with an
appendix (no more than 10 pages) containing the results of your analysis, by no later than 22 nd April 2013 at
1:00 pm. I look forward to your response.
    Sincerely
    James Bronson

Part 1: Data Analysis (= Excel Output)
In order to prepare a reply to the editor’s letter, you will need to use Excel to analyse the data set
    “Insurance.xlsx” thoroughly.
You will need to apply techniques you have learned during lectures and tutorials in Weeks 1, 2 and 3, such as:
      tables
      graphs, and
      summary measures.
You DO NOT need to perform any additional analysis other than what you have learned in weeks 1, 2 and 3!
Please use the worksheets ‘Q1’ through ‘Q6’ to work on each question. You may initially produce more Excel
output than you really need, so you will need to only copy relevant output from these worksheets to the ‘Results’
worksheet. Keep in mind the page limit of 10 printed pages for the analysis AND that the presentation of the
    results will be marked too!
    Guidelines
The editor has asked for a number of tasks to be done. The following guidelines for each question
    should be followed:
    1. Can you provide me an overall summary of how much brokers have currently quoted car insurance
    customers on their insurance premiums?
You will need to use numerical analysis methods to summarise quotes overall.
For Part 2, you will need to write about the average, variability etc. as in the examples in the relevant
    lecture and tutorial.
HINT: The Week 2 lecture and tutorial may be helpful.
    2. I am also interested whether quotes vary between brokers. Are there significant differences in their
    quotes?
Here you will need to analyse two variables together. Are there differences across brokers or are there no
    significant differences?
For Part 2, focus on whether there are differences or not. If yes, make sure you describe them.
HINT: The Week 3 lecture (beginning with slides 5 and 6) and tutorial may be helpful.
    3. Can you inform me how frequently each broker is used?
You will need to use categorical analysis methods to summarise brokers overall.
For Part 2, briefly describe your findings. Examples can be found in the relevant lecture and tutorial.
HINT: The Week 1 lecture and tutorial may be helpful.
MSQ171 Business Data Analysis Assignment One, Trimester 1 2013  6
    4. In addition, can you further analyse to see whether factors such as customers’ gender (Male vs.
Female) and the area they live in (Rural vs. Urban) affect customers’ choice of broker?
Again, you will need to analyse two variables together. Make sure you look at the correct section of your
output to see if there is a relationship (dependency) between the variables.
For Part 2, focus on whether there are differences or not. If yes, make sure you report them. If not,
    mention this.
HINT: The Week 3 lecture (beginning with slides 5 and 6) and tutorial may be helpful.
    5. I have heard that some brokers tend to be favoured in some states. Is there any evidence of such a
    pattern?
Again, you will need to analyse two variables together. Make sure you look at the correct section of your
output to see if there is a relationship (dependency) between the variables.
For Part 2, focus on whether there are differences or not. If yes, make sure you report them. If not,
    mention this.
HINT: The Week 3 lecture (beginning with slides 5 and 6) and tutorial may be helpful.
    6. Finally, can you provide a summary of which factor (or factors) has the most influence on current
insurance premium quotes? A short description of the relationship would be fine.
Once more you will need to use techniques for the analysis of two variables. You will need to analyse six
    (6) relationships. (You can ignore annual savings.) In each case, the type of the relationship – if there is
one – and its direction and strength is of interest.
For Part 2, make sure you comment on what you find in each case.
HINT: The Week 3 lecture (beginning with slides 5 and 6) and tutorial may be helpful.
    General guidelines:
  Before doing any analysis, classify all your variables as either numerical or categorical. The
techniques you will use depend on the type of data you have.
  As mentioned above, the analysis section (Part 1) you submit should be no more than 10 pages of
computer output. You might produce much more than this initially, but you should trim it down to
only show the most relevant results.
 When satisfied, you can print the ‘Results’ worksheet from your Excel file, or copy-and-paste your
analysis output into a Word document before printing it (for the hardcopy submission).
 Your analysis should be presented in the same sequence as the editor’s questions, and everything
should be clearly labelled and grouped around each question.
  Also, make sure, no table or graph “breaks” across two pages.
 Poorly presented or unorganised analysis or excessive output (more than 10 pages) will be
    penalised.
 Save your computer analysis frequently (every 10 to 15 minutes).
MSQ171 Business Data Analysis Assignment One, Trimester 1 2013  7
Part 2: Letter (= Your Reply to the Editor’s Letter)
You are required to reply to the editor by letter, explaining essential information and conclusions from
your data analysis. You are allowed no more than two pages to convey your written findings.
  Keep the English simple and the explanations brief.
  Avoid the use of technical statistical terminology. The editor will not necessarily understand
even simple statistical terms, thus your task is to explain your analysis using plain,
    understandable language.
    General instructions:
  The letter is to be written as a separate document. Thus, you should not have any direct
references to your analysis in your letter, such as “As table 1 shows, …”.
  When writing your reply, make sure that you actually provide the information the editor
requested in his letter to you. That is, answer the editor’s questions.
  Do not refer to or include computer output tables and charts in your response letter.
  Number your answers in your letter 1, 2 a, … etc., to match the sequence of the editor’s requests.
  Include an introduction at the start of the memo and a summary/conclusion at the end.
Marks will be deducted for the use of technical terms, poor grammar, awkward sentence structure, poor
spelling and punctuation, irrelevant material, poor presentation/organisation and letters that are over
    two (2) pages long.
When you have completed the letter, it is a useful exercise to leave it for a day, return to it and re‐read
it as if you knew nothing about the analysis. Does it flow easily? Does it make sense? Can someone
without prior knowledge follow your written conclusions? Often on re‐reading, you become aware that
you have made some points in a clumsy manner and you find that you can re‐phrase them much more
    clearly. Good luck!
